Gavin’s World
“Great photography is about depth of feeling, not depth of field.”
-Peter Adams, Adams Sydney, 1987
“When your mouth drops open, click the shutter.”
-Harold Feinstein
I come from an arty family. My father can draw, my elder sister can draw, my younger sister can not only draw, but runs a classic clothing boutique, she’s very arty. Me? I’m unable to do a crayon justice, never mind sketch.
I’d accepted my lot in life, took the odd photo, doodled in meetings and consoled myself with being a decent cook; well, that is creative isn’t it? The problem is that you may be able to create a stunning goan fish curry, but it’s such a relatively short lived pleasure, even when shared with friends. Then one day, a couple of years ago, I went to an exhibition of modern photographic art in Edinburgh and I was stunned. The images larger than life before me, struck such a chord. They were beautiful and fascinating.
Later that day I bought my first camera, a modest Canon Sureshot and an obsession began..
Lives Through a lens
From as young an age as I can remember, I’ve dreamed in colour. My earliest nightmares were the technicolor of Hanna Barbara, and even my adult dreams are like descending into parallel life. However, my hand could never form what my eye could see, with paint and paper. Until one day, I found my canvas, the camera.
